What is an emergency tooth extraction?
A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes your natural tooth and root structure from its socket. Extracting your natural tooth is never our first treatment choice for any particular oral condition. However, in some cases, extraction is necessary to preserve the integrity of the surrounding tissue and/or teeth. Usually, an emergency tooth extraction is required only when it’s necessary to remove the tooth. Your dentist will exhaust all other options (such as filling or crown) before recommending tooth extraction to prevent further pain, damage, discomfort or decay.
Your Ranieu Family Dental dentist may need to perform a tooth extraction if any of the following apply to your particular situation:
- The tooth decay is too severe to repair
- The tooth is broken beyond restoration
- Advanced periodontal disease has damaged the supporting bone structure
- Decay on one tooth is spreading to surrounding teeth
- Uncontrollable bleeding from tooth injury
When your tooth is badly damaged or infected, tooth extraction will give you the best chance for optimal oral health and can help ease dental pain caused by damage or infection almost immediately. If you need an emergency tooth extraction, your dental team will make the procedure as comfortable as possible. We offer local anesthetic to numb the area so you won’t feel anything during the procedure, along with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for relaxation.
Why do I need to get care from an emergency dentist?
If your injury requires tooth extraction, your emergency dentist is experienced in this procedure and will ensure the best possible outcome for your situation. In some cases, like if your tooth is badly decayed or has broken off below the gum line, your dentist may need to make incisions in your gum to access the tooth. This requires skill and ability to properly repair the gum tissue after the extraction. Once your tooth is removed, your dentist will clean and disinfect the area before stitching the small incision. Your dentist may place a dental bone graft to help prevent bone loss in your jaw and surrounding teeth from shifting. This is temporary solution until a more permanent solution is in place, such as a dental implant or porcelian bridge.

What are my options to replace my tooth after extraction?
A dental implant is a permanent smile solution to missing teeth. After you’ve healed from the tooth extraction, talk to your dentist about dental implants. We also offer porcelain bridges, a prosthetic appliance that spans the width of the area in your mouth where a tooth or teeth are missing. A porcelain natural-looking crown is affixed to the dental implant or bridge.
